Ingredients

For the Toffee Base
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter Can use salted butter but reduce added salt to a pinch.
  • 2 cups Granulated Sugar No substitutions recommended for optimal results.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt Leave out for an unsalted toffee or use a pinch of sea salt for a twist.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract Use pure vanilla extract for best flavor; imitation can be substituted.
  • 1/2 cup Water No substitutions necessary.
For the Chocolate Topping
  • 1 cup Semi-Sweet or Milk Chocolate Chips Substitution: Dark chocolate for a more intense flavor, or white chocolate for a sweeter profile.
For the Crunchy Finish
  • 1 cup Chopped Nuts (Pecans, Walnuts, or Almonds) Omit for a nut-free version, or use toffee bits instead.

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • heavy-bottomed saucepan

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Prepare Your Pan & Ingredients: Line a 9x13-inch baking dish with parchment paper, gathering all ingredients together.
  2. Make the Toffee Base: In a saucepan, combine butter, sugar, salt, and water. Heat over medium, stirring continuously until golden brown, reaching hard crack stage (300°F) in about 10-15 minutes.
  3. Pour & Spread: Quickly pour the toffee onto the baking dish, spreading evenly with a spatula.
  4. Add the Chocolate: Let the toffee sit for 1-2 minutes, then sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly. Wait 2 minutes for melting, then spread into an even layer.
  5. Sprinkle the Nuts: Sprinkle the chopped nuts over the melted chocolate, pressing them gently to adhere.
  6. Let It Set & Break: Cool at room temperature for about 2 hours or refrigerate for 30 minutes. Once hardened, lift the parchment paper out and break into bite-sized pieces.
