For the Batter

  • 1 large Egg can be omitted for vegan version
  • 1/2 cup Water use cold for lighter batter
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder essential for crunch

For Frying
  • 2 cups Vegetable Oil for frying
For the Sauce
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce adds umami

  • 1/4 cup Hoisin Sauce can substitute with extra soy sauce and honey
  • 2 tablespoons Chili Sauce adjust for desired heat
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar balance sauce flavors
  • 2 cloves Minced Garlic enhances flavor

For the Veggies
  • 1 medium Onion sliced
  • 1 medium Bell Pepper sliced
  • 2 pieces Red Chilies optional
For Drizzling & Garnish
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame Oil adds nutty flavor
  • 2 tablespoons Chopped Green Onions for garnish

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Slice the beef sirloin or flank steak thinly against the grain into strips.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together cornstarch, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Gradually add the egg and cold water, mixing until smooth.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-high until hot.
Cooking
  1. Dip each beef strip into the batter and fry in batches for 3-4 minutes until golden brown.
  2. In a wok, heat sesame oil and sauté garlic, ginger, onion, and bell pepper for 2 minutes.
  3. Stir in soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, chili sauce, and sugar, and simmer for 2 minutes.
  4. Add crispy beef back to the wok and toss to coat in sauce, cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  5. Garnish with sliced chilies and chopped green onions before serving.
