Ingredients

For the Tofu
  • 1 block Extra-Firm Tofu Provides structure and texture; using extra-firm is key for the crispiest results.
  • 1/4 cup Cornstarch Coats the tofu for enhanced crunchiness when fried; don't skip this step!
For the Sauce
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce Adds umami and savory flavor; substitute with tamari for a gluten-free option.
  • 2 tablespoons Rice Vinegar Provides tang; can be swapped with apple cider or white wine vinegar if needed.
  • 1/4 cup Honey Sweetens the sauce; for a vegan version, use maple syrup or agave nectar.
  • 3 cloves Garlic Fresh minced garlic adds an aromatic flavor; be generous for that punch!
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Ginger Enhances flavor with zest; if you're in a pinch, use ginger powder.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes Optional for heat; adjust the amount to suit your spice preference.
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame Oil Adds depth of flavor; though not essential, it makes a difference in taste.
For Frying
  • 1/4 cup Cooking Oil Use vegetable or canola oil for frying; ensure it's hot to achieve that crispy exterior.
For Garnish (Optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame Seeds Perfect for garnish, adding crunch and visual appeal to your dish.
  • 2 tablespoons Green Onions Adds freshness and a pop of color; chop them finely for the best effect.

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Saucepan
  • cutting board
  • knife
  • Heavy Weight
  • Large bowl

Method

Preparation
  1. Begin by pressing your extra-firm tofu to remove excess moisture, which is crucial for achieving that desired crispiness. Wrap the tofu in clean kitchen towels, place a heavy weight on top (like a skillet or a few cans), and let it sit for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Once your tofu is pressed, carefully unwrap it and cut it into bite-sized cubes, approximately 1-inch thick.
  3. In a large bowl, toss the cubed tofu in cornstarch until each piece is thoroughly coated.
Cooking
  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, minced garlic, and grated ginger, stirring frequently until the mixture begins to bubble and thicken slightly, about 5 minutes.
  2. Heat about 1/4 inch of cooking oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil shimmers, add the tofu cubes gently in a single layer, frying them for 3-4 minutes on each side until they turn golden brown and crispy.
  3. When the tofu is golden and crispy, reduce the heat to low and carefully add the fried tofu to the prepared sauce in the pan. Toss gently to ensure each piece is evenly coated.
Serving
  1. Transfer your delicious Crispy Honey Garlic Tofu to a serving plate and sprinkle with sesame seeds and finely chopped green onions.
