Step-by-Step Instructions for Kreatopita
  1. Heat a generous amount of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once shimmering, add finely chopped onions and sauté for about 5 minutes until soft and translucent.
  2. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for 7-10 minutes until browned and no longer pink.
  3. Stir in the uncooked rice, tomato sauce, oregano, and season with salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly and add a splash of water. Simmer uncovered on low heat for about 10 minutes.
  4. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  5. Brush a baking dish with melted butter or oil. Lay out five sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each layer with butter or oil.
  6. Spoon the beef and rice mixture into the center of the phyllo base. Cover with more phyllo sheets, brushing each with butter or oil.
  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes until the top is golden brown and crispy.
