Step-by-Step Instructions for Kreatopita
  1. In a large skillet, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Sauté one chopped onion until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add your choice of ground beef, lamb, or pork, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned, roughly 7-10 minutes. Stir in rice, tomato sauce, oregano, salt, pepper, and a splash of water. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes until flavors meld.
  2. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Coat a rectangular baking dish with melted butter or olive oil. Unroll the phyllo dough, covering unused sheets with a damp towel. Layer five sheets into the dish, brushing each with melted butter.
  3. Spread the meat and rice filling evenly over the prepared phyllo layers. Carefully drape additional phyllo sheets over the filling, brushing each with melted butter.
  4. Place the assembled Kreatopita in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes until top is golden brown and crispy.
  5. Once baked, remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
