Ingredients

For the Bars
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter Use salted butter if unsalted is unavailable; reduce added salt.
  • 1 cup Light Brown Sugar Dark brown sugar can be used for a richer taste.
  • 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar Can be replaced with coconut sugar for a lower glycemic index.
  • 2 Large Eggs Use room temperature for best results.
  • 1/2 cup Pure Maple Syrup Avoid imitation syrup; opt for darker syrups for a richer taste.
  • 1/2 cup Milk Dairy-free or plant-based milk may be used as a substitute.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract Use pure extract for the best taste; however, imitation can be substituted in a pinch.
  • 1 cup All-purpose Flour Gluten-free flour blends can be used for a gluten-free version.
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Powder Ensure it's fresh for the best results.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda Can be omitted if you have ample baking powder.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt Omit if using salted butter.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon Optional; nutmeg or allspice can be used as alternatives.
For the Maple Glaze

  • 1/4 cup Pure Maple Syrup Use high-quality syrup for the best taste.
  • 2 tablespoons Milk Use either regular or plant-based milk as a substitute.
  • a pinch Salt A pinch is all you need to elevate the flavors.

Equipment

  • 8x8-inch pan
  • Mixing Bowl
  • whisk
  • spatula

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8×8-inch pan with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together melted unsalted butter, light brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth and creamy, about 1-2 minutes. Add large eggs, pure maple syrup, milk, and vanilla extract, mixing until well incorporated.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and optional ground cinnamon. Whisk until evenly mixed.
  4. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients with a spatula until just combined. The batter should be thick and slightly lumpy.
  5. Transfer the batter to the prepared pan and spread it evenly across the surface, smoothing the top.
  6. Bake for 22-25 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick inserted in the center. It should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
  7. Once baked, cool in the pan on a wire rack for 15-20 minutes to allow the texture to settle.
  8. While the bars cool, whisk together powdered sugar, pure maple syrup, milk, and a pinch of salt for the glaze until smooth.
  9. Once cooled, spread the maple glaze evenly over the bars and allow to set for a few minutes.
