Prepare the Chili
- In a large skillet, cook 1 pound of lean ground beef over medium-high heat until browned, about 7-10 minutes. Drain fat and transfer to stockpot. Add diced tomatoes, brown sugar, and all spices. Mix thoroughly.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for about 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
Make the Patties
- Season 1 pound of ground beef with salt and pepper in a bowl. Shape into 4 equal patties about ¾ inch thick.
- Make an indentation in the center of each patty to prevent puffing while cooking.
Grill the Patties
- Preheat the grill to medium-high, around 400°F. Brush grates with oil.
- Grill patties for about 7 minutes per side, adding cheese during the last minute.
Assemble the Burgers
- On each bun bottom, place a patty, top with ¼ cup chili, 1 tbsp queso dip, and 2 tbsp crispy onion strings.
- Add the top bun and press down gently.
Serve
- Serve immediately while hot, paired with your favorite side dishes.
