Ingredients
  

For the Chili
  • 1 pound lean ground beef 15% to 20% fat for moisture
  • 28 oz diced tomatoes 1 can
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar can be swapped with honey
  • 2 Roma tomatoes diced
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 packet chili seasoning 1.25 oz
  • 6 oz tomato paste 1 can
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp chili powder adjust to taste
  • 15 oz black beans drained and rinsed
  • 15 oz pinto beans drained and rinsed
For the Burger
  • 4 slices American cheese or cheddar
  • 4 tbsp queso cheese dip store-bought or homemade
  • ½ cup crispy onion strings can replace with fried onions
  • 4 hamburger buns fresh

Method
 

Prepare the Chili
  1. In a large skillet, cook 1 pound of lean ground beef over medium-high heat until browned, about 7-10 minutes. Drain fat and transfer to stockpot. Add diced tomatoes, brown sugar, and all spices. Mix thoroughly.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for about 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
Make the Patties
  1. Season 1 pound of ground beef with salt and pepper in a bowl. Shape into 4 equal patties about ¾ inch thick.
  2. Make an indentation in the center of each patty to prevent puffing while cooking.
Grill the Patties
  1. Preheat the grill to medium-high, around 400°F. Brush grates with oil.
  2. Grill patties for about 7 minutes per side, adding cheese during the last minute.
Assemble the Burgers
  1. On each bun bottom, place a patty, top with ¼ cup chili, 1 tbsp queso dip, and 2 tbsp crispy onion strings.
  2. Add the top bun and press down gently.
Serve
  1. Serve immediately while hot, paired with your favorite side dishes.
