For the Onion
  • 2 medium Sweet Onions Use Vidalia or Walla Walla for best flavor
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour Substitute with gluten-free flour if needed
  • 1 tbsp Paprika Increase for extra heat
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper Optional, adjust to taste
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 2 cups Panko Breadcrumbs Use gluten-free if needed

For the Dipping Sauce
  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup Sour Cream
  • 1 tbsp Ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Hot Sauce Adjust to taste

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cut off the top of the sweet onion and peel. Slice into 8-12 equal segments, keeping the root intact.
  3. Set up three bowls: mix flour and spices in one, whisk eggs and milk in another, and fill the last with panko breadcrumbs.
  4. Dredge the onion in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg wash, and finally coat in panko breadcrumbs.
  5. Place the onion on the baking sheet with petals facing up and spray with cooking spray.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, rotating halfway, until golden and crispy.
  7. While baking, mix all dipping sauce ingredients in a bowl until creamy and well combined.
  8. Remove the onion from the oven, let cool slightly, and serve hot with dipping sauce.
