  • Skillet
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Mixing Bowl

Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Bring salted water to a boil in a large pot and cook the ziti pasta until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onion is translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the ground beef or sausage and cook until browned. Drain excess fat, then mix in marinara sauce and Italian seasoning. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Blend until creamy.
  5. In a 9x13 inch baking dish, layer half of the meat sauce, half of the cooked ziti, half of the ricotta mixture, and one cup of mozzarella. Repeat layers, finishing with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.
  6. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes, then remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
  7. Let the dish cool for a few minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil if desired, then serve warm.
