Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter cubed
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup cooked and crumbled breakfast sausage or turkey sausage
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 large egg

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Whisk until well mixed.
  3. Add the cold cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and crumbled sausage until evenly distributed.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
  7. Using a biscuit cutter or a glass, cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Gather any scraps, re-roll, and cut out additional biscuits.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour.
  • You can also add chopped fresh herbs like chives or parsley for extra flavor.
  • For a vegetarian option, omit the sausage and add sautéed vegetables like spinach or bell peppers.
