- Start by freezing a block of extra firm tofu for at least 24 hours, then thaw it overnight in the fridge. Press the tofu to remove excess moisture.
- Cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes and marinate in vegan chicken broth for at least 15 minutes.
- Prepare the buttermilk mixture by combining plant-based milk, apple cider vinegar, and hot sauce. Let sit for 5 minutes. In another bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, cornmeal, and seasonings.
- Heat vegetable oil over medium heat to 370°F (187 °C).
- Dip marinated tofu cubes in the buttermilk mixture, then in the flour mixture. For extra crunch, repeat the process.
- Carefully fry the breaded tofu nuggets in batches for about 3-4 minutes until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
- Serve hot with your favorite vegan dipping sauces.
